Juli 2010 - In Portugal heeft de locale Playboy de onlangs overleden Portugese schrijver en Nobelprijswinnaar José Saramago gelauwerd. Op de cover van het julinummer knielt Jezus naast een topless model, verschijnt hij aan een lesbisch koppel, aan een prostituee en aan een derde vrouw, reminiscent aan het katholiek schoolmeisje, die topless een boek (van Saramago?) leest. De foto's zijn bedoeld als eerbeteen aan Saramago en verwijzen naar zijn roman "Het evangelie volgens Jezus Christus" (1971). In dat boek maakt hij gewag van een liefdesrelatie tussen Jezus en Maria Magdalena, wat hem op censuur is komen te staan en door Portugese bisschoppen als godslasterlijk bestempeld. Zijn verhouding met Portugal is er danig door verstoord geraakt en hij ging in Lanzarote wonen. Op de coverfoto staat aan het hoofdeind van het bed de titel van het Saramago's boek in hout gekerfd.
De foto's zorgen voor heel wat turbulenties in het katholieke Portugal én bij het hoofdkantoor van Playboy, dat de publicatie "onwaardig" noemt. Een woordvoerder van Playboy zegt dat men de cover nooit heeft gezien noch goedgekeurd. Intussen zouden de exemplaren van het nummer uit de schappen zijn gehaald. Playboy USA heeft bovendien de samenwerking met de Portugese regionale uitgever opgezegd. Volledigheidshalve dient vermeld dat kenners van het oeuvre van Saramago van oordeel zijn dat de ode smakeloos en kitscherig is.
Uit de First Post - Jose Saramago's 1991 novel The Gospel According to Jesus Christ is a fictional retelling of the life of Christ, seen from his perspective. Its publication caused outrage because it depicts a human, passionate Christ who ends up firmly opposed to God's plan to create a new religion through him. In one particularly criticised scene, a shepherd tries, unsuccessfully, to persuade Christ to have sex with a sheep. It is hard to interpret Playboy's images as a tribute to Sarmago's work: their Christ is as idealised and unreal as that of any kitsch Catholic icon, not all-too human like Saramago's. In avoiding any contact between 'Christ' and his lovelies, the magazine demonstrates a distinct lack of bottle: the photographs could easily have been much more offensive – and truer to Saramago's vision - if they depicted Christ interacting with them. While these images of Christ with pneumatic topless models have inevitably provoked outrage, it could be argued that they are more sexist than blasphemous. The gospels say Christ spent time with prostitutes, forgiving their sins. The photos depict this - though their depiction of prostitution is horribly glamourised. The overall effect is of a cheap attempt to stir up outrage and grab publicity. It seems to have backfired.

Yet it seems fairly certain that no fatwas will be issued, and no death threats will be made. For this little bit of sanity, Christians and non-Christians alike can take some comfort. Marking the death of an atheist by depicting Jesus Christ in sex scenes might seem like a non-sequitur. Somehow, it made sense to the Portuguese edition of Playboy magazine.It's not the first time an international edition of the "men's magazine" has caused a stir by depicting a Christian figure. In its December 2008 issue the Mexican edition featured a model dressed - barely - like the Virgin Mary.
The US edition of the magazine raised the ire of political conservatives in 2009 when it published an article by Guy Cimbalo in which he described the violent sexual acts he wanted to commit against conservative women, calling the acts a "hate f***."

And now his magazine just got canned because of it! Meanwhile, DealBook brings news that Playboy founder Hugh Hefner and major shareholder Rizvi Traverse Management have issued a proposal to take the company private in an offer that would value Playboy at roughly $185 million. If Playboy reaches a deal with Mr. Hefner and his backer, it would finally go private again after 39 years of being a public company. While the company’s eponymous magazine is a cultural mainstay, its popularity peaked years ago, and the publisher has been struggling since. Over the past year, Playboy has been trying to revitalize the brand through new partnerships, new hires and attention-grabbing covers. Things were looking up in May, when the company announced it had narrowed its Q1 net loss to $1 miilion from $13.7 million a year earlier. But a few weeks ago, Playboy announced it would be restructuring and downsizing, including layoffs, as part of its ongoing trasition to what CEO Scott Flanders describes as a "brand management company." According to Playboy’s press release on Hefner's offer: "If the proposal moves forward, PEI's board of directors will form a special committee of independent directors to consider the proposal. The committee would retain independent financial advisors and legal counsel to assist it in its work." In the meantime, at least now they have one less international edition to worry about.

Playboy Enterprises is in the process severing relations with Frestacom-Lisboa Media Publishing, over the July 2010 cover of Playboy Portugal. The Portuguese subsidiary was responsible for the photo shoot: a hommage to recently deceased, Nobel Prize-winning author José Saramago's "The Gospel According to Jesus Christ", which was published in 1991. Oh, that novel was fictional, by the way, portraying Jesus as a compassionate human with mood swings and character flaws. Except Saramago puts his Jesus on a cross only to have him apologize for God's sins; as many sons often do in ancestral atonement. Reviewing the photographs from this photo shoot, Jesus is clearly portrayed as an aparition. And an untainted one at that. Jesus is not shown swiving madly with abandon in sinful pursuits. No, our kind King of Jews is depicted as a glowing presence of determination, one that does not abide or judge. Perhaps it is this very ambiguity that stirs controversy? I can't imagine the idea of Jesus next to a prostitute being shocking in itself—it is common and documented knowledge (both the Vatican bible and the King James version affirm this) that Jesus conversed with people of all classes without reserve, including prostitutes. After all, where are saviours to dwell but amongst "sinners"? If Playboy executives see this shoot as controversial, they might want to read Saramago's novel. In this fictional account of Jesus's life, our bright young hero apprentices with a shepherd portrayed as the devil. This devious shepherd attempts to instruct Jesus on how to best use sheep for the release of sexual tension, but Jesus isn't really into it. Once Jesus meets God in the desert, the shepherd gives up on Jesus completely. My point here is that if one wants to deliberately shock with this novel, there's plenty more material to be mined for sensation. Surreal and innovative with language, Saramago's "The Gospel According to Jesus Christ" is the novel that frustrated the author enough to flee Portugal for the Canary Islands in 1992. Cavaco Silva, the same president who recently (June 2010) ratified gay marriage in Portugal, found Saramago's novel offensive enough to be removed from the European Literary Prize's short list in 1992.Is Playboy's closing of its Portugal subsidiary a lash against the novel's infamy? Or advantageous timing during a tough print publishing climate, to close a less profitable title? We did not see or approve the cover and pictorial in the July issue of Playboy Portugal,” Theresa Hennessy, Vice President of P.R. at Playboy Enterprises tells the Daily Mail UK. “It is a shocking breach of our standards and we would have not allowed it to be published if we had seen it in advance,” Hennessy added. I agree that creative teams should and need to respect editorial direction and standards, while pushing creative style. However, Playboy has published interviews of and by authors of far greater controversy—including Salman Rushdie. Given that images of Jesus next to prostitutes is not exactly a new idea; not in the Bible and certainly not in the history of art, there isn't much sense in calling these photographs shocking. Perhaps it is the association with the novel's history that Playboy can't quite reconcile. Or, it might just be a clear-cut case of Jesus Envy.

De Portugese auteur en Nobelprijswinnaar José Saramago is vanmorgen op 87-jarige leeftijd overleden in zijn woning op Lanzarote, nadat hij onwel was geworden aan het ontbijt.

Saramago leed de laatste tijd aan leukemie. Tot zijn bekendste werken behoren De stad der blinden en Het evangelie volgens Jezus Christus. Recent verscheen van zijn hand nog De tocht van de olifant evenals een bundeling van zijn blogs. Saramago was een notoir atheïst en behield levenslang zijn communistische inspiratie. In 1974 was Saramago een voorvechter in de Anjerrevolutie die het dictatoriale regime van Salazar van zijn voetstuk deed tuimelen. Saramago liet zich later ook regelmatig opmerken door boude politieke uitspraken en verbaal vuurwerk. Saramago werd in 1922 geboren in het dorpje Azinhaga, in een armoedig gezin van dagloners. Zijn jeugd bracht hij door in Lissabon. Zijn universiteitsstudies werkte hij niet af. Later studeerde hij halftijds en ging hij aan de slag als metaalbewerker. Zijn eerste roman verscheen in 1947: Land van de zonde. Pas 20 jaar later kwam hij met een nieuwe roman. Ondertussen werkte hij als journalist. Opvallend is dat zijn werk pas waardering kreeg toen hij al ruim vijftig jaar was. Hij beleefde zijn doorbraak met romans als Memoriaal van het klooster en Het jaar van de dood van Ricardo Reis. Zijn oeuvre kreeg vertalingen in meer dan 20 talen en in 1998 ontving hij de Nobelprijs voor Literatuur. De Mexicaanse schrijver Carlos Fuentes reageerde toen: "En eigenlijk verdiende hij ook die voor de vrede". In 1992 veroorzaakte Saramago schandaal in Portugal met Het evangelie volgens Jezus-Christus, waarin hij Jezus opvoerde terwijl hij zijn maagdelijkheid verloor aan Marie-Magdalena en gebruikt werd door God om zijn heerschappij over de wereld te vestigen. Saramago verliet vervolgens Portugal om zich te vestigen in Lanzarote, een van de Canarische eilanden. Een relletje ontstond ook omtrent zijn recent verzamelde blogs in El Cuaderno, waarin hij bij herhaling kritisch was over de Italiaanse premier Silvio Berlusconi. Zijn Italiaanse uitgever Einaudi weigerde daarom het boek uit te geven. Het boek verscheen in Nederlandse vertaling als De andere kant (zie de recensie bij De Reactor). Bij de voorstelling van zijn laatste boek Caim, noemde Saramago de bijbel dan weer een "handboek voor slechte moraal". De roman Caim was een ironische hervertelling van het verhaal van Kain, zoon van Adam en Eva, die zijn broer Abel om het leven bracht.
